Does your company support AWIS? Does your company know about AWIS's work in support of career development for girls and women in science? How does AWIS raise funds to support its programs?

The Northern California Chapters of AWIS have many programs and events that are possible because of support from corporate sponsors. Corporate fund-raising is a continuous activity that is essential to the vitality of our AWIS chapters. We have developed an effective fund-raising strategy and the goals and activities of the local AWIS chapters make a good case and an easy sell, if we can present it to the correct person in a company that has a corporate giving program. As a non-profit we qualify under several different corporate giving categories.

When we get to the right corporate person, and establish an ongoing relationship, we have a very good success rate. Finding the HR or personnel department is easy. Almost every company has one. But understanding each company's corporate giving program requires inside knowledge. For example, if the company has a corporate giving program, what department and which person should be contacted to initiate a discussion? Finding answers to these questions can take an outsider a long time.

To maintain and enhance fund-raising, we need help from AWIS members and supporters in two areas: 1) Gathering information - Identifying the right corporate person to contact about corporate sponsorship 2) Fund-raising - Offering the company the opportunity to support AWIS

First, an AWIS member within a company who can make inquiries and has access to an internal directory can greatly shorten the time it takes to determine whether a company is a good candidate for a corporate sponsorship. She can find out who to call to make initial inquiries. This greatly increases the efficiency of our fund-raising efforts. If, as an AWIS member and employee, you can assist the fund-raisers by lending your name or your voice to their efforts, that is a welcome additional contribution to our fund-raising efforts and increases the chance of success.

Second, we need people to help with fund-raising by contacting present and potential corporate sponsors about AWIS and following up on those contacts. This requires a small amount of time spread over weeks or months; mostly it is tracking and following up the relationship as needed with a few phone calls. The corporate fund-raising work is coordinated by the fund-raising committee chair. We have an established database and protocol with written presentation materials on AWIS and templates for follow up and thank you letters. We will train and assist you in the rewarding work of fund-raising. Currently, all our corporate funds come from the efforts of two members who have developed the procedures and materials and who been doing this for several years. A couple of more people contacting companies and establishing relationships will allow more companies to be contacted and ensure continued corporate sponsorship for AWIS and its programs.

To help us help AWIS by supporting our fund-raising efforts, write Miriam Valesco, Fund-Raising Committee Chair at mvalesco@holonet.net

Women’s Appointment Project

The Association for Women in Science is currently involved in the Women's Appointments Project and would like to ask for your help. Training and education in science is not enough. We each need to find our individual ways of using our science and developing a professional life and career. In honoring individual women, AWIS recognizes the importance of mentoring and of teaching and sharing with others more than just the content and techniques or our science.

Two awards go to women working in research or technological advancements in academia or industry: one to a woman established in her field, one to a woman early in her career.
